The major attraction for many tourists coming to Phu Wua is the herd of wild elephants (watch the video) that live in the sanctuary. The elephants have been sighted in many parts of the park, and are most active in the evenings and at night-time. This is one of the best opportunities for wild elephant trekking in Thailand. The best way to see them is from one of the elephant watching tree-houses.
There are many other rare and interesting animals that live in the Wildlife Sanctuary. In addition to the wild elephants, there are four other species also protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The Phu Wua lizard exists only inside the sanctuary.
Overnight or day trekking is available and camping equipment and food can be provided for the trip. Come to the Ban Kham Pia village “Village of the Little Tamarind” visitors center for more information. Watch the trekking video.
A good Bed & Breakfast service is also available at Ban Kham Pia Village.
The Phu Wua Wildlife Sactuary is part of Thailand's National Park system and approximately a day's travel northeast of Khao Yai National Park. Phu Wua is also a good option for seeing elephants in the wild and another great place for Thailand trekking.
